“There’s no evidence to suggest it was anything but a complication of the medical procedure,” Jacob said. They were sitting on a bench outside the courtroom, awaiting the final day of questioning in Donald Pinzolo’s trial. “I can’t jolly well tell my Captain that you read Murdoch’s mind and saw her do it. Lucille had just had a hole drilled into her skull and her brains addled under the State’s medical authority. She died. I’m surprised more don’t, to be honest.” He shook his head. “You know I believe you, but without any physical evidence, there’s nothing I can do to put Sister Murdoch under investigation, let alone this other unknown woman behind it all. We have no idea who she is. We’ve got no witnesses, no motive. Nothing.”

“So, Lucille is buried in a pauper’s grave, Sister Murdoch continues working, Tilly is holed up at Kitty’s, a half dozen call-girls have been murdered – and somewhere out there, this unknown woman, the real Boudoir Butcher, is running around as free as a bird!” said Betty.

“And probably planning more murders,” Jacob added.

“No doubt,” Betty said, her eyes flashing. “Whatever this game is that she and the Tin Man are playing, they’re about to find themselves on the wrong side of the board.”

They fell quiet for a few seconds as a handful of suits walked past. Despite all of Jacob’s protestations, Betty had insisted on accompanying Adina, though she’d agreed to wait outside so Donny didn’t see her. Betty didn’t mind a stitch; she could easily tap into the thoughts of any of the jurors if she wanted to know what was happening. As soon as they’d arrived, Adina had dashed to the powder room in a fit of nerves. Now, Betty and Jacob sat on the bench outside it, keeping watch and waiting for the proceedings to begin.

“Tell me again, what she said to you,” Jacob said.

“You seek the Tin Man,” Betty recited. “Give up your search. Now. Or I’ll do worse than tell the world your secrets.” She scoffed. “Can you imagine? I’m being threatened by a woman who hides behind others to commit murder for her. It’s cowardly. Honestly, if she thinks I’m not up to getting my hands dirty she’s got another thing coming.”

Jacob tried to suppress a laugh. “She’s really gotten under your skin, hasn’t she?”

Betty gave him a side glance. “Only a smidge.”

Jacob grinned. “Well, better her than me. I’d hate to be on the wrong side of you.”

“Thank you, darling,” Betty beamed, as if it were a great compliment. “That woman is in for a nasty surprise.” An odd smile flitted across her face and a gleam of something a little unhinged seemed to float just beneath the surface.
